Few conditions for a dog are as painful or visually repulsive as mange. Mange is a condition that carries with it a stigma of disgust that can turn a lovable family pet into an unattractive and unwanted animal. While the main visual effect of this disease is a loss of hair coupled with inflamed bald spots, mange is more severe than other illnesses like allergies that can result in a disappearance of fur.

This is considered to be a quite harmful condition and must be addressed immediately before the situation worsens and your pet develops complications. The cause of this unsightly and unhealthy disease is usually a tiny mite and comes in three different varieties.

Cheyletiella mange – Known also as walking dandruff, it mostly affects puppies and is caused by large red colored mites that are tiny but visible to the naked eye.  Upon careful inspection you will notice what appear to be tiny flakes that would normally be attributed to dandruff, except that these flaky scales actually move. This type of mange usually occurs on the head, neck and back and tends to only last for a short time.

Demodectic mange – Also known as The Red Mange, is caused by a mite smaller in comparison to the one previously mentioned and is undetectable without a microscope. Mostly affecting your cute small fur balls between the ages of 3 to 12 months, this is the demodex canis mites and in known to attack younger dogs due to their immature immune systems.

This particular type of mange may occur based more on genetics, with certain family lines being more susceptible than others. The critter is commonly found within the pores of the skin and can manifest into hair loss on the dog’s head, legs and other parts of the body.

Sarcoptic mange – Commonly known as scabies, is also a microscopic mite with the female of the species to blame for your dog’s itching and scratching behavior. This nasty mite burrows under the skin to lay their eggs which becomes the source of the irritation. After a few days the eggs hatch, quickly grow up and begin the cycle all over again.
